Ways to Protect your Teeth Everyday

(03) 9087 2683

A healthy mouth can lower the risk of oral cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Similarly, by preventing major dental problems, you will be able to spend less on dental treatments.

Here are some tips on how you can protect your teeth everyday:

Brushing Twice Daily

You should be brushing your teeth twice a day, everyday. Proper teeth brushing includes

  • Beginning with the outer surface of your teeth
  • Tilting the toothbrush at 45 degree angle to the gums
  • Replacing your toothbrush every 3-4 months
  • Brushing and washing the tongue and rinsing it with clean water

Floss Daily

Toothbrushes can not remove all the plaque and food that builds up in your teeth. These food particles can cause inflammation, gingivitis ( gum disease) and periodontal disease. You should be using a interdental cleaner. Gently guide the flossing material between your teeth without hurting your gums. It is recommended that you use a piece of floss around 30 cm long.

Drink lots of Water

Acids from beverages, food and plaque can destroy your teeth's enamel. You can prevent this by drinking water with fluoride. The water will wash away any residue that may be beneficial to cavity- causing bacteria. Since saliva is 99% water, your mouth will become dry if you are low on saliva. The saliva protects your teeth by introducing fluoride, phosphate and calcium into your teeth. Drinking lots of water prevents a dry mouth and helps the saliva fight tooth decay.

Use Fluoride toothpaste

Children and adults can avoid cavities if they use toothpaste containing fluoride. This is because fluoride reduces the demineralisation of teeth and slows acid production by bacteria in the mouth. In addition, fluoride can reverse the early signs of tooth decay.

Eat a healthy diet

Drinking and eating foods containing acids and sugar will weaken your teeth. As such, it is important to follow a diet that provides essential nutrients for your teeth. For instance protein rich foods such as eggs, milk, fish, poultry and meat are excellent sources of phosphorus. That's because the phosphorus helps the formation of teeth and in holding teeth in place.

Don't Smoke

Smoking can affect your oral health because it reduces the amount of oxygen in the blood stream. In addition, smoking can affect how your teeth attach to the soft tissues in your mouth. You can protect your teeth by avoiding smoking nicotine and tobacco products.
