Wisdom Teeth Removal

At Sleep Dentistry Melbourne, we offer wisdom teeth removal for patients. Whether it's an impacted wisdom tooth or a gum infection, our specialist dentists are here to help.

What are wisdom teeth?

Your wisdom teeth are those last four adult teeth that come through between the ages of 16 and 23. You'll find them at the very back of your mouth, which is why they're also known as the third molars.

Most of us have four wisdom teeth — two on the bottom, and two on the top. Some people don't develop any wisdom teeth at all, while other people only have a few. Your dentist can tell you whether you're missing any wisdom teeth.

Although they emerge late, wisdom teeth don't normally cause any problems. However, it's sometimes necessary to remove all or some of your wisdom teeth to keep your mouth healthy.

Why wisdom teeth are removed

Because wisdom teeth emerge so late, there's not always enough room in the mouth to accommodate them. If there's not enough room for the wisdom teeth to come through, they might emerge at an angle, or they'll get stuck below the gum line.

Wisdom teeth that get stuck against your other teeth or can't emerge fully are known as "impacted" wisdom teeth. However, just because your wisdom teeth are impacted doesn't mean they should be removed.

When you need your wisdom teeth removed

We may recommend wisdom teeth removal if you develop:

  • Gum bleeding or swelling, or bad breath
  • Tooth decay or pain
  • Jaw pain
  • Tooth crowding or damage to adjacent teeth
  • Headaches

We'll take an X-ray and assess whether you need one or more wisdom teeth removed.

Preparing for your wisdom teeth removal

The team at Sleep Dentistry Melbourne will put you under general anaesthetic before removing your wisdom teeth, which will help you fall asleep, so you won't be able to remember the surgery.

After your wisdom teeth removal, you can rest in our recovery area until we're satisfied that you're fit to go home. For your safety, you will need to ask someone to pick you up and take you home.

There's no need to worry about your wisdom teeth removal — our highly trained dentists will do everything possible to alleviate your fears and keep you comfortable throughout the whole procedure.
